In the old days, bands depended upon gigging and record company advances to fund their recordings. Nowadays, this artiste has decided to depend solely upon notoriety. I have decided to go directly to you, the fans, in a sense to become my record label. By pre-ordering my third album “1965,” you will be financing the recording of this important record. Many third albums have become the artist’s breakthrough work, like U2 or even Primal Scream, though I’ve never heard them. This is not charity. If you pre-order my third album “1965,” your name will be posted on my WordPress.com blog wall “Jim’s Eternal Wall of Friendship.” In addition, if the unthinkable happens and I’m not able to cajole 500 eternal friends to pre-order the album “1965,” I will make available for download an album of my spoken word poems, title not yet decided, but possibly called “Intellectual Property.”

well i still remember the day some techie bought a copy of Blender magazine into the office in NZ and it seemed so ultra modern – it was on a CD rom and it had music you could play on it. Wow, was I impressed. Many, many clicks later I came across a review of the first LJR album and the track Amsterdam, a ska shuffle with live sounding brass and some deadpan but heartfelt lyrics. The amount of pleasure that disc has brought us over the years has been immeasurable. It just sounds great. The words are great. the playing is great. Then onto Sniff we went … boy we thrashed that one too … loud very late at night. In fact the fretwork on the last track always tapered off into our saturday morning hangover. So we’ve signed on for 1965. We can’t help with the haircut. Maybe nobody can. But we’ll spread the word down in the antipodes …
Nigel,
Thanks for the donation and the kind words! I usually reserve that type of praise for my bicycle. Looking forward to The Hobbit movie.

Dear Jim, I am indeed a fan. I had hope to be able to hear some new tracks here on your website. Am I missing something? (entirely possible knowing my state of mind now…) But seriously, would love to “click” on some new tracks of yours – or old for that matter. Much love to you, Chan.
I was a high school senior at the State Cross Country meet in 1982 when I realized I wasn’t ever going to be Sebastian Coe. I focused all my attention on music. What a wonderful, amazing time it was to be discovering music. My tastes hadn’t become so myopic as they would become a year or two later. Aztec Camera, Culture Club, B-52′s, Joe Jackson, Dexy’s, Let’s Active!, all great. I ended up joining an amateur band with Blake kids in it. I learned to play octaves on bass to Music for Boys. We played a coming out parties and old men danced to their daughters to Girlfriend. In the fall of 83′ my Macalaster student ID showed me sporting my “Suburbs haircut.” Later that year I became obsessed with Ska and then british 60′s music and found an identity, but that what I heard at that time had a profound impact on me, as I’m sure you can tell when you hear my songs. I’m much honored that you consider yourself a fan of mine, the feeling is quite mutual. I’ll try to post some new music soon.

Damn you Jim Ruiz, you bastard of musical genius. Taunting us with the Sasquatch-like third album is torture. I have made my donation and will do my best to rally the troops on the ol’ Facebook page to get you where you need to be to finally give the people what they want….but a few teasing morsels of what you are working on would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks for encouraging words, yes I really do mean it! I’ll work on your request. I’ll try to come up with something for the next post.
